Pulau Weh is tropical beach island that is a popular destination from Bukit Lawang. The main activities on Pulau Weh are swimming in the tropical sea, relaxing on the white sand beaches, diving and snorkelling.
Pulau Weh can be reached by ferry from Banda Aceh city, at Ulee Lheue port. There are fast ferries taking 45 minutes and slow (car) ferries taking 90 minutes, both between 8am and 4pm. The fast ferry costs 85,000rp and the slow ferry 35,000rp.
To reach Banda Aceh city you can take a night bus (around eight hours) from Binjai, which is 2 hours drive/bus from Bukit Lawang. Or you can fly from Medan Kuala Namu airport, which is around 3.5 hours drive from Bukit Lawang. From Banda Aceh airport to the ferry port takes 30 minutes and around 100,000rp by taxi. Or from the bus station around 15 minutes and 50,000rp by taxi. There are several daily flights from Medan to Banda Aceh. From Banda Aceh connections to Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Jakarta are also possible.
It is also possible to fly directly to Pulau Weh from Medan airport. There are flights by Wings (12:20 from Medan, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, returning at 13:55), and Garuda (Friday and Sunday 08:50 returning 10:40)
